Three Cheers for the Emergency Room!

Let me start by saying I'm fine now.

This morning, when I took my vitamin pills they lodged in my throat. I didn't choke or anything, they just got stuck. All three of them. It hurt. On a scale of 1-10 this was a 7 and climbing.

I drank water, and more water, and more water for about 15 minutes. The only change was, it was getting more painful. I could breathe okay and even talk and cough, but eventually, swallowing became more difficult and painful and I thought things might go downhill from there.

Brand had been on his way to work when this happened, one foot out the door, but hung around to make sure I was alright. Thank goodness, because after a half hour of this he Googled "pills stuck throat" and learned that it's a job for an emergency room, so off we went. He kept me calm, reminding me I'd be fine, we were in the right place if things went south, etc. (Thanks Honey!)

They were great at the ER, saw me right away and explained what they had in mind to help me. First step was a shot of glucogon in my arm to see if it would relax the esophagus. If that didn't work after 1/2 hr, the ENT guys would have to go in and do their thing. As the nurse prepped me for that eventuality, getting blood samples, etc, the glucogon kicked in and the pills dislodged! The pain disappeared instantly. We finished paperwork and went on our merry way home. I felt like SUCH an idiot, but they were so nice and knew just what to do. They said if it ever happens again, a piece of bread or banana might help, but I'd tried to eat a piece of shredded wheat and it felt like it was just adding to the logjam.

I've been taking these three vites (calcium and B complex in the am, calcium and C in the evening) twice a day for years with no problem. From now on, I'll take them one at a time. Rolleye Smileys

Kowabunga, Jinx! I do the same thing. I've always bragged that I could swallow a golf ball but you just never know. Glad it was quickly resolved without having the ENT guy shove something down your throat.

Oh my goodness! You haven't come this far to be done in by a pill! Glad it all turned out alright, but having a narrow throat and many close calls over the years, my throat tightens just looking at those horse pills. Three at a time? No way!
